Water and sanitation
The political situation in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) has postponed a solution to the problems of inequitable access and usage of the region’s water. Over-pumping, poor infrastructure, misuse and lack of access to water resources, and movement restrictions on Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza has denied their right to sufficient and safe water and sanitation. In the Gaza strip, one of the primary concerns is securing quality and sufficient quantity of water to assure economic and social development, at a time when the magnitude of population growth is amongst the highest in the world.
CARE strives to provide Palestinian communities with improved access to quality water and adopt behaviors to more efficiently use water resources in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. To achieve this objective, the water program undertakes projects that involve making new water wells, building household water cisterns, small scale irrigation systems, rehabilitating and building new water systems, pumping stations, constructing sanitation units for village schools, and increasing community awareness of sanitation and water conservation. During its fiscal year of 2009, CARE was able to reach more than 170,000 individuals who benefited from efforts to providing safe and affordable water and better access to water.
