Emergency Food Security Assistance in the Occupied
Palestinian Territory (Food 7)

To ensure vulnerable communities in the West Bank and Gaza are food secure by helping to increase their food production and income.

West Bank
The food project is implemented in the Jenin and Toubas areas (i.e., in the communities of Jabba’, Al-Fandakoumiyeh, Siris, Al-Jadida, Sanour, Mirkeh and Al Zawya in Jenin and in Aqqaba, Tayaseer and Al Maleh in Toubas).

The project aims to improve the asset base of vulnerable households and sustained income in rural areas by distributing a mix of the following items: beehives and relevant equipment; sheep, feed, and animal sheds; or supporting small greenhouse farming providing all planting inputs.

Of great importance are CARE’s efforts to upgrade the skills and knowledge of beneficiaries so they can better manage the commodities provided by the project.

Milk products produced by women from herds are bought by the project and distributed to vulnerable families. This is a win-win strategy that helps women producers overcome the additional obstacles they face (as women in traditional rural areas) in reaching markets as well as providing food insure families with a no cost protein rich food source. The project also supports livestock breeders in getting better health care for their animals.

The project will provide 120 livestock breeders from Al-Malih village in the Jordan Valley with animal health care, in an area where access to veterinary services is difficult. A veterinary doctor will visit the livestock breeders regularly and offer them veterinary medicine. CARE will also facilitate access of the veterinary doctor to reach all breeders, thus reducing the cost they incur for veterinary services and help them sustain their livestock.

Gaza Strip
The project is implemented in the governorates in the middle and north of Gaza (Deir al Balah, Wadi Al Salqa, Al Zawayda, Um Al Nasser, Al Mallalha, Al Shojae’a, Al Zaytoun and Al Mugrakah).

In Gaza the project provides needy families with the following mix of items: agricultural tools for the rehabilitation of destroyed agricultural land and greenhouses; rabbits, feed, and cages; and support for small greenhouse farming and all planting requirements. CARE also up grades the skills and knowledge of beneficiaries so they can better manage the commodities provided by the project.
