Food security and livelihoods
CARE WBG is the leading organization in fresh food distribution and food security activities in the oPt. With limitation on access to movement within the West Bank due to check- points and political restrictions, many Palestinians cannot continue lifestyles that were once feasible. A year after the end of the Israeli offensive on Gaza in December 2008, more that 75% of Gaza households - 1 million Palestinians - still rely on food aid to support their families.
Under its food security and livelihood program, CARE was able to assist more than 300,000 vulnerable individuals in 2009. The program addresses both immediate and long term food security needs of Palestinians. It provides vulnerable households and social and health care institutions with fresh vegetables, at the same time it assists farmers in selling their products. It also contributes to protecting vulnerable households who lost their main source of income from falling into the poverty cycle by creating small income generating activities for them. These include but are not limited to: providing them with beehives, rabbits, small greenhouses, chicken, sheep and the appropriate training as needed. Farmers are also supported to rehabilitate their agricultural lands and greenhouses in order to resume their agricultural production. Such programs assist vulnerable households in achieving sustainable livelihoods, especially at a time of rapidly increasing unemployment and a limited economy.
