Emergency Water Supply and Sanitation in the West Bank (Water 7)
In August 2006, CARE WBG received the grant approval from the European Commission's Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid, to implement the project for “Emergency Water supply and Sanitation in the West Bank” in seven Palestinian communities in Jenin and Tulkarem areas.
The emergency operation will improve the household livelihood security in the beneficiary communities through improved and rehabilitated water systems, improved water storage facilities, and better sanitation facilities for vulnerable and poor households.
The target communities are Arraba, Qabatia, Beer al Basha, Attil, Deir al Ghusoun, Baqa ash Sharqia and Shuweika. By the end of the project, approximately 15,000 vulnerable people will benefit from the intervention.
The intervention is in response to poor access to safe and drinkable water or sanitation facilities in the Jenin and Tulkarem communities. There are three reasons for the difficult conditions in this field:
1. Stringent Israeli policies in the oPt and the consequences thereof (separation wall, land confiscation, movement restrictions, etc).
2. Obsolete water and waste water systems in the West Bank, and minimal financial resources to maintain and upgrade the existing systems.
3. Poor water quality due to pollution of water resources, bad storage facilities, low hygiene, and inadequate sanitation facilities.
Household beneficiaries in this project will have 15 water cisterns constructed; in Beer al Basha village, in addition to rehabilitating a water well in Baqa ash Sharqia, rehabilitating and expanding internal water networks in Attil, Arraba, Deir al Ghusoun and Qabatia; rehabilitating and expanding two school sanitary units in Shuweika and Beer al Basha, building the capacity of municipal staff in the field of water, tariff and cost recovery, and conducting awareness raising campaigns regarding water provision; environmental and public health.
CARE is coordinating this project with the Palestinian Water Authority, the Ministry of Education sub-offices, the French Red Cross, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, and local village councils.
Budget of the project is Euro 750,000 and implementation will take place during the course of 12 months, as of August 2006 - July 2007
Duration: 12 months, as of August 2006 - July 2007.
Funding: The European Commission Directorate of Humanitarian Aid (ECHO).
Budget: Euro 750,000.
