Emergency Relief / Water
Emergency Water Supply and Sanitation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip (Water 6)
Water is a scarce resource in the Middle East. It is a critical problem in the West Bank and Gaza because of excessive pumping, poor infrastructure, misuse of water, and little rainfall. The problem is compounded by the ongoing conflict in the region. In the past five years, movement restrictions have limited Palestinian access to water resources, and because of the political impasse, the mechanisms previously put in place to equitably allocate water resources broke down.
CARE and the Palestinian Hydrology Group (PHG), with funding from the European Commission’s Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid, is implementing a water and sanitation project in areas that were particularly affected because of water shortages: namely Jenin, Tulkarem, and Gaza.
This Project, “Emergency Water Supply and Sanitation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip”, is implemented in 12 communities in two clusters in the occupied Palestinian territories. In the West Bank, the project is targeting eight communities in the north-western Tulkarem district and western Jenin district. They are: 'Akkaba, Baqa ash Sharqiya, 'Illar, 'Nazlat 'Isa, Zeita, Dhaher al 'Abed, Al Khuljan, and Umm Dar. In Gaza, four communities in the northern district will receive help, and they are Beit Lahiya, Beit Hanun, Jabalya, and Umm Al-Nasr.
The Project will increase the quantities of potable water in vulnerable and poor households in the target communities. CARE is improving and rehabilitating water systems, purchasing equipment for tankering water, rehabilitating wells and water resources, and installing water systems and school sanitary units.
Duration: August 2005 – September 2006.
Funding: The European Commission Directorate of Humanitarian Aid (ECHO).
Beneficiaries: 102,065 individuals.
