Community Development / Food Security
Sustainable Access to Food and Economic Security (SAFES)
The SAFES Jenin project will improve food security in 763 poor and marginalized Palestinian households in ten villages in the Jenin District of the West Bank. Because of the ongoing conflict and travel restrictions, residents of the beneficiary villages are vulnerable to declining living standards. Their difficulties are further complicated because of their high dependency on the Israeli labour market, lack of access to nearby cities and towns, lack of easy access to water, and, in some cases, proximity to the Separation Wall.
The SAFES project is an integrated set of activities that will increase the skills and capabilities of the beneficiaries, strengthen community participation, and provide sustainable livelihoods to residents of Jenin District. Activities will diversify the crops, strengthen the water conservation systems, introduce high-yielding ruminants, offer training and extension services in animal husbandry, improve small-scale agriculture, and develop the village-based marketing and cooperative associations.
The SAFES Project is implemented in two village clusters in the Jenin area of the West Bank. Cluster one consists of Zabuba, Rummana, A’anin, Tura El Gharbiya, and El Tayba. Cluster two consists of Ez-Zabaida, Raba, Jalqamus, El Mughier, and Um Etut.
Duration: March 2004 – March 2007.
Funding: The European Commission(EC).
