Emergency Food Security Assistance to Vulnerable Households in the West Bank and Gaza Strip(Food 4)

The Palestinian economy has been devastated by five years of violence. Nearly two-thirds of the population is living below the poverty line of $2.20 per day. Rural areas of close proximity to the Wall, and communities in Gaza were particularly hard hit.

This project, “Emergency Food Security Assistance to Vulnerable Households in the West Bank and Gaza Strip,” will improve the food security of families living in villages in the West Bank and Gaza through the promotion of small-scale agricultural activities.

The project targets 15 villages in Jenin, Tulkarem, and the northern Gaza Strip. CARE is implementing this project in partnership with village councils, women groups, the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Local Government, and Palestinian NGOs. CARE and its local partners have identified families in the 15 villages that either lost their source of income or became vulnerable to falling into poverty. Selected families are eligible to participate in a variety of activities including the provision of green houses, land rehabilitation, sheep and beehive distribution, training in animal husbandry, home gardening, food processing, and the establishment of marketing mechanisms for home products.

When the Project is completed, the beneficiary families will have adequate assets to engage in and manage their food production, farmers will have improved food security, and women will have a more active role in the household and community due to their strengthened social and economic activities.

Duration: September 2005 – August 2006.
Funding: The European Commission Directorate of Humanitarian Aid (ECHO).
Beneficiaries: 5,290 individuals.
