Emergency Assistance to Sustain Health Care Services in the Occupied Palestinian Territories

Emergency Assistance to Sustain Health Care Services in the Occupied Palestinian Territories This Project will improve the well-being of Palestinians in vulnerable communities in Jenin, Tubas, Nablus, East Bethlehem, and Hebron districts, through increased coverage of primary health care services and trained health staff. CARE West Bank Gaza will implement this project in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Palestine Medical Relief Society, the Health Work Committees, and the Institute of Community and Public Health at Birzeit University.

This Project is a follow-on to the previous Emergency Assistance to Support Primary Health Care Services in Jenin, Toubas and Hebron implemented through the period 1 September 2005 to 31 August 2006.

The Project is responding to health needs in the West Bank, as revealed in the assessment conducted by CARE on the most vulnerable communities in the West Bank and Gaza. The target communities are suffering from bad economic conditions. Some lack any type of health services, while access to health facilities is very difficult. The separation Wall has further complicated the situation. The existing health facilities in the form of village health rooms are not adequate and do not fulfill the needs of the communities.

The Project will provide health care services to 92 Palestinian communities in Jenin, Toubas and Hebron districts. 80 village health rooms and 12 stationed clinics will also benefit from this project in terms of pharmaceuticals, disposables supplies, rehabilitation and refurbishment of the village health rooms, and the provision of basic medical equipment to the mobile clinics and village health rooms. Training of medical staff, health education and promotion, and rational drug use are crucial elements of this emergency Project. In addition, emergency preparedness and response capacity building interventions will be supported to Palestinian communities in the West Bank and Gaza.
