Emergency Response

During the 22 Israeli Military offensive, “Cast Lead” in Gaza which started in late December 2008 and early January 2009, nearly 14,000 houses and apartments were destroyed in the bombings. Almost repairs have been undertaken as construction materials such as cement and glass are not allowed into Gaza under the restrictions of the continuous Israeli blockade.

CARE responded within hours of the start of the conflict, distributing urgently needed food, medicine, and emergency supplies to families, hospitals and orphanages. Our Emergency program provided basic non-food items such as blankets, personal hygiene kits, and household cleaning supplies to more than 37,500 Gazans displaced by the ongoing conflict. We also provided medications and helped build the local capacity to better cope with health needs. This was achieved through providing mobile clinics to reach vulnerable and distant populations that would have otherwise severely limited opportunities for health services. CARE also advocates for easing restrictions on the blockade and for allowing construction materials into Gaza so families can rebuild their homes.
