Civil society strengthening
CARE has a long-term commitment to engage Palestinian communities in development processes that enable them to determine their futures, realize their rights, and live in peace and dignity. It aims to strengthen the capacity of Palestinian civil society organizations (CSOs), complementing its emergency humanitarian efforts in the health, food security, and water sectors. To achieve this, CARE empowers Palestinian CSOs and NGOs to become more effective advocates of their own interests and rights. CARE also promotes gender equality as a fundamental element of development strategies that seek to enable all people -women and men alike - to escape poverty and improve their standard of living. It works on creating the opportunity for women to exercise their right to identify their aspirations, participate in public processes to improve their lives, reduce the vulnerability in the face of personal or family crises and during economic difficulties, and increase their ability to influence decisions in their communities.
In addition, CARE advocates for conflict mitigation. We believe that any peaceful future for the Palestinian people and their Israeli neighbors is going to be predicated on a Palestinian community which is civil, able to resolve disputes without violence, and whose citizens are able to function and engage socially, politically, and economically in a peaceful society. Thus, CARE works with various audiences to create a cadre of Palestinian women, men, and children, who are conversant in developing conflict resolution. This results in a population equipped with attitudes that lend themselves to positive citizenry; trust, cooperation, communication, kindness, respect for rules, respect for other’s property, under- standing other’s feelings, and responsibility for one’s actions.
