Civil Society Strengthening

Promotion of Popular Theatre in Development

Popular Theater is a unique educational approach that started with the work and writings of Brazilian artist and educator Augusto Boal. Popular Theater is a highly dynamic, provocative, interactive tool intended to increase awareness, initiate change, or modify attitudes and actions.

The project will be implemented over the period of three years (2004-2006) in partnership with Care International, the Center for the Theater of the Oppressed in Brazil (CTO-Rio), and Ashtar Theater in the West Bank and Gaza.

The aim of the Project is to utilize Forum Theater to address social inequities and injustice among the marginalized segments of society.

Activities include:

1. Conduct a training workshop in Middle East for 30 senior Care staff.
2. Prepare a training program for Ashtar Theater trainers.
3. Conduct training workshops Ashtar staff.
4. Provide training to select community groups.
5. Develop and perform Forum Theater plays that are relevant to the target communities.
6. Disseminate the experience and the lessons learned.

Duration: Jan 2004 - December 2006
Funding: Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and CARE Canada.
