With funding from the France
CARE is Distributing Emergency Medical Assistance to Palestinians

15 Sep 2006. CARE West Bank and Gaza is distributing emergency medical assistance and supplies to the Ministry of Health Central Warehouses in Ramallah and Gaza. Funding was provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France and the City of Paris for € 200,000.

The emergency shipment consists of 38 items of medicine for chemotherapy, kidney transplantation, and diabetes, in addition to anesthetics, intravenous fluids for general use, antibiotics and anti-viral treatments for serious infections. This will enable 36,000 Palestinians in the West Bank, and 24,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip to receive medicines.

Elizabeth Sime, CARE Country Director in the West Bank and Gaza, thanked the French Foreign Ministry and the City of Paris for making this contribution, which Sime described as extremely valuable and comes at a time when medical supplies are badly needed. Sime thanked the Consulate General of France and CARE France for facilitating this assistance package.

According to CARE West Bank and Gaza, medical assistance from France comes at a time when there is a steady deterioration in the humanitarian situation. Public institutions that deliver basic services, such as health, are unable to come up with the funds they need for medical supplies. Also there are problems pertaining to their ability to bring in such supplies. An ever increasing number of Palestinian families are asking for assistance, as they struggle to cope without incomes or the means to ensure their families are safe and protected from illness.
