With Help from USAID, CARE International is providing Oxygen Equipment to Gaza Hospitals

This week, CARE International is installing four Oxygen Generators/Extractors in Gaza hospitals. The United States Agency for International Development is providing the needed sum of $ 500,000. The project is implemented in cooperation with the Palestinian Ministry of Heath.

The new equipment will supply oxygen to four area hospitals, namely: Nasser Hospital, Beit Hanoun, Tel Sultan, and Durra. Moreover, the oxygen cylinders’ filling plant of each Extractor will supply oxygen to Ministry of Health clinics in Gaza.

CARE International has had its Emergency Medical Assistance Program II expanded, in order to include the Oxygen Extractors/Generators. The United States Agency for International Development is providing the extra funding

Installation will take one week after the new equipment enters Gaza, but work started since April 2005 to set-up the needed infrastructure.

Nasser hospital consists of two buildings and a third one under construction. It is the oldest hospital in the southern part of Gaza and it has 664 beds. Durra Hospital is located in Gaza City. It has 90 beds and it serves the central part of the Gaza Strip. Tel Sultan Hospital has 50 beds. It has a new building, in the stage of being furnished. Beit Hanoun Hospital, also newly built, has 40 beds, and is located in the northern part of the Gaza Strip.


The equipment is arriving in Gaza on Wednesday, 22 June 2005. The inauguration ceremony will be announced later.
