15 February 2006.The Safety and Security Officer in CARE West Bank and Gaza, Wael Kirresh, offered training on procedures of safety and security to the staff of CARE Yemen. The overall aim of the training was to help the staff reduce the risk they might face and improve their ability to manage stressful situations. For three days, the project managers, guards and drivers, were introduced to safety plans, what to do if caught in a crossfire, dealing with threats, kidnappings, mapping and planning the routes, communications, information sharing, vehicles, checkpoints, landmines, earthquakes and landslides, first aid, incident reporting, and the role and responsibility of the safety officer. Over the course of three full days, Wael shared his experience with the participants. 28 staff members attended the training. Wael used PowerPoint presentations, LCD projector, and a TV with VCR to offer explanations and expand the participants’ understanding of safety issues. Also, he illustrated steps the staff should take to protect their personal safety, that of their colleagues, and the property and belongings of their organization. The training was highly practical, and it was well received by the staff of CARE Yemen. Upon completion of the training, participants in the safety and security workshop received certificates of attendance. This is Wael’s second visit to Yemen. He was there in January to develop a safety and security manual for CARE Yemen.
