Second Shipment of Emergency Medical Supplies by CARE, with Funding from USAID
On Wednesday, 17 May 2006 CARE distributed kidney dialysis supplies and medications to 12 Ministry of Health Hospitals in the West Bank and Gaza. This is the second emergency shipment in one week that will meet the urgent need among Palestinians. The United States Agency for International Development funded this intervention, as part of CARE’s Emergency Medical Assistance Program, third phase.
Jacob Walles, US Consul General, saw the trucks off in the CARE warehouse in Ramallah. Walles thanked CARE, and said that assistance to Palestinians reflects the commitment of the US government to help the Palestinian people. He added that since 1993 the US provided 1.3 billion dollars in aid to Palestinians, and the US remains committed to the Road Map and the vision of a two-state solution, Palestine and Israel, living side by side in peace and security. David Harding, USAID’s Deputy Head of Mission, thanked CARE staff and said they put together the lists of medicine in a matter of days, and that all the medicine procured is made by Palestinian companies.
Salam Kanaan, CARE’s Ramallah Field Manager and Health Sector Coordinator, told the press the aim of this urgent endeavor is to send kidney dialysis medicine to hospitals that are running out of supplies, so that lives will be saved. Supplies and medicine were procured urgently to cover the needs of the 12 hospitals for three months, at a total cost of $ 425, 000 that constitutes the first order of an allocated budget of $ 800,000.
