5 September 2005. CARE West Bank and Gaza held an international workshop in Amman, Jordan. Training was offered on Forum Theater as a tool for raising awareness and generating debate on social problems that are taboo in society. Participants attended from CARE Mozambique, India, Jordan, Kosovo, and the West Bank and Gaza. Barbara Santos, from the Center for the Theater of the Oppressed, Brazil, offered the training. The workshop was funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) through its grant to CARE Canada. Actors from Ashtar Theater, Ramallah, performed “Hikayet Mona” (The Story of Mona) on early marriage in Palestine, as an example of Forum Theatre techniques. The workshop participants gave their suggestions on changing parts of the play in order to mobilize society and demand legal reform. The 5-day workshop helped the participants understand the techniques of Theater Forum. In the end they produced two plays: on drug addiction, and violence against women. Also the participants came up with work plans for their Country Offices. The participants will return to their countries and pilot the techniques with different community groups, and they will inform the West Bank and Gaza Office how their initiative is developing. CARE West Bank and Gaza and Ashtar Theatre will assist the country offices in developing Forum Theatre projects within their programs. |
