CARE deliver winter protection materials to 250 families and adult diapers to the main hopsital in Gaza

4 January 2009, CARE and partner organisations comforted people as they delivered 2 trucks worth of blankets, plastic sheets, sticky tape and heaters throughout Gaza. These items are desperately needed as many families have lost all their belongings and their homes or are living in dire conditions in the cold with their windows blown out or open to the elements.

250 vulnerable families in North Beit Hanoun, North Jabalyia, Beit Lahia, middle Gaza, Khan Younis and Rafah received assistance.

CARE staff also provided the Intensive Care Unit of the main Shifa Hospital with urgently needed adult diapers for those who are severely injured. Hospitals continue to be overwhelmed and under supplied. Doctors are performing complex treatment to the wounded in the corridors and on floors. Specialist assistance and a steady flow of supplies and equipment are urgently required.

With all borders closed people have no where to flee from the Israeli aerial and sea bombardment and ground invasion. It is estimated that over 2,000 families (13,000 – 16,000 people) are already displaced from their homes. Many have moved in with relatives and friends placing a huge burden on dwindling household supplies of food and water. Others have sought refuge in three shelters provided by UNRWA and located in schools, two in the north and one in the south.
